Restaurant Reviews/ Toronto and GTA

{Review} A great value at Hockey Sushi (AYCE Sushi buffet)

Website: http://www.hockeysushi.com/
Address:  1102 Centre St. Vaughan ON (Thornhill location)
When I visited: May 2014, dinner
Rating: $$, 4
Baby info: Has high chairs

The Vaughan location of Hockey Sushi is in a largely Jewish neighbourhood with only a handful of Japanese restaurants in the area. With the name “Hockey Sushi”, you would assume the authenticity would be toned way down with burgers and fries on the menu. That is not the case, the recently renovated joint is legit.  This particular location is our family favourite and we have frequented the restaurant for a number of years.

The food is comparable to many all-you-can eat (AYCE) sushi restaurants in the Toronto but they have many delicious speciality items like salmon roe sushi, dim sum and large portions of squid sashimi. Any maki rolls with the rice paper rolls are a must! The food is consistent and the fish always tastes fresh. The price is fantastic for the food that you get. On the weekends and holidays, the price is $20.99 (before tax) for an adult which is fabulous and on the lower end of AYCE joints. On the website, you can print out a 10% off coupon when paying with cash (click here for the coupon) which makes the dinner an even better value.

As for the service, the restaurant can work on the consistency. I have gone when the servers were attentive and other times the opposite.

Overall:

I am a big fan of Hockey Sushi that I almost didn’t want to share this hidden gem in Thornhill, not so hidden to the locals like us. With 5 locations across Ontario including Ottawa and Guelph, I am sure they have a large following of customers. Happy eating!

Usually because it is in a Jewish area they know to keep the prices low because Jews of course are notoriously cheap but I don’t think Jews eat sushi to begin with. Anyway with that name I was not interested but maybe I will try it if it’s good. But dim sum WTF?
